Every logistics vendor is talking about AI. That’s not a problem. The problem is that operations leaders are being asked to make real investment decisions, budget commitments, vendor selections, infrastructure changes, without a reliable way to separate production-ready capability from product roadmap. And in logistics, that distinction isn’t academic. It shows up in whether your gate runs at three seconds or three minutes. It shows up in whether your inventory data is current or eight hours stale. It shows up in whether your team is executing or confirming.

I’ve spent my career inside operations. I’ve seen what happens when technology gets selected on the strength of a demo rather than the evidence of a deployment. The demo always works. The yard is more complicated than the demo.


The Confusion is Real, and It’s Legitimate

Operations executives are not wrong to be skeptical. The AI conversation in logistics has moved fast, and a lot of what’s being presented as available today is genuinely aspirational. Autonomous yard trucks. Predictive load sequencing that accounts for weather, traffic, and carrier behavior simultaneously. Fully staffless gate operations at any scale. Some of this will exist. Some of it is closer than the skeptics think. But the honest answer right now is that a meaningful portion of what’s being demonstrated is a roadmap, not a product.

That doesn’t mean AI in yard operations isn’t real. It means the question most buyers are asking, “what can AI do for my yard,” is the wrong question. It invites vendors to talk about what’s possible. The right question is harder and more specific.

What is your AI doing right now, in production, at real facilities? Not in a pilot. Not in a controlled environment. In a yard like mine, running shifts like mine, with the variability and volume mine has.

That question separates vendors who are selling a vision from the ones who are selling a product. And it’s the question I’d ask every vendor in this space, including us.


What’s Actually Working Today

The technology that’s changing yard operations right now isn’t impressive because it’s artificial intelligence. It’s impressive because it removes uncertainty from operational decisions.

Take gate processing. Computer vision built specifically for logistics environments can read containers, chassis IDs, license plates, and seals accurately in rain, glare, low light, partial obstructions, and the kind of visual chaos that’s normal at a busy inbound gate. It validates carrier identity against live FMCSA data in real time. It flags a blacklisted vehicle before the truck clears the gate, not during a manual audit two days later. And it does all of this without requiring any interaction from the driver, no app, no check-in, no clipboard.

Manual gate processing at most facilities runs three to ten minutes per truck. Operations running automated vision systems process gate events in under 20 seconds. That’s not impressive because AI processed an image. It’s impressive because dispatch, security, and operations can trust that information the moment the truck arrives. One version of reality, available to everyone who needs it, immediately.

The same principle applies to inventory. Yard checks used to mean someone on foot or in a vehicle, logging manually, creating a record that was already partially out of date before they finished the circuit. Automated camera systems mounted on existing yard vehicles now enable continuous scanning without disrupting operations. Inventory accuracy reliably reaches 95 percent or better, giving downstream systems, your TMS, your WMS, your YMS, current data to make decisions against rather than yesterday’s count.

None of this is a roadmap promise. It’s deployed. It’s running. It produces measurable outcomes you can verify before you sign anything.


The Real Value Isn’t the Technology

Here’s the thing most AI vendors won’t tell you: the technology is not the point. The point is operational confidence.

Yards lose time not in one big failure but in the gap between what’s happening on the ground and what the data says is happening. That gap shows up as hesitation. A move that gets double-checked before it’s made. A decision that waits for confirmation that should already be there. A crew that radios in because the system says one thing and the yard looks like another. Those moments accumulate across every shift, every day. They slow throughput, increase exceptions, and make it harder for experienced people to do what they’re actually good at.

The right technology closes that gap. It doesn’t replace operational judgment, it gives operational judgment something reliable to work from. When your team trusts the data, they act. When they don’t, they verify. And the cost of verification, in time, in labor, in friction, is where most of the hidden cost in yard operations actually lives.

AI isn’t valuable because it’s artificial intelligence. It’s valuable because it creates one version of operational reality that everyone can trust and act on immediately.


How to Evaluate What’s Real

When you’re evaluating yard technology, from us or from anyone else, I’d suggest skipping past the feature list and asking four questions instead.

Is the data current? Not “near real time.” Not “updated frequently.” Current. Reflecting what is happening in the yard at this moment, not what was entered 20 minutes ago or reconciled at end of shift. If the vendor can’t tell you precisely how current their data is and what the source of truth is, that’s your answer.

Is it verified or entered? Human-entered data reflects what someone remembered to log. Video-verified data reflects what actually happened. Those are not the same thing, and in a fast-moving yard, the difference between them is where your exceptions, disputes, and missing assets come from.

Is it deployed or demonstrated? Ask for customer references at facilities that run similar volume and variability to yours. Ask what they were measuring before and what they measure now. A vendor with production deployments can answer that question specifically. A vendor selling a roadmap cannot.

Does it work with what you already have? Your TMS, WMS, and YMS are not going away. The right yard visibility layer makes those systems more accurate, not redundant. If a vendor’s pitch requires you to replace your existing infrastructure to unlock their value, that’s a risk worth understanding before you commit.


Separating Proof from Promises

The operations leaders who will have the strongest position over the next three to five years are not necessarily the ones who adopted AI first. They’ll be the ones who adopted it deliberately, asking the right questions, choosing technology that was already proven in production, and building a foundation of operational confidence that everything else can build upon.

The yard has been one of the last unmanaged links in the supply chain for a long time. That’s changing. The technology making that possible isn’t theoretical. It’s already running in real facilities, producing measurable operational results.

The question isn’t whether AI belongs in the yard. It does.

The question is whether you’re investing in proven capability or promised capability.
